Turf war
The much-awaited press conference of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh did not elicited any major policy announcements or shifts in government functioning. However, the presser sure ruffled a few feathers in the government while at the same time also bringing out the turf war between various ministries of the government.
The entire plenary hall of Vigyan Bhawan, the venue of press conference, was taken aback after a foreign correspondent complained to the Prime Minister that their fraternity (foreign correspondents posted in India) were not being issued PIB cards. The issue may seem trivial but had political connotations as three top ministries of the government, MEA, MHA and I&B are involved in the process.
However, the presence of several foreign correspondents at the venue also came under a scanner as the event was open only to PIB accredited correspondents and they weren't accredited to the PIB. The entry of these correspondents is being considered a breach of sorts as a highly influential official (a spokesperson of one of the influential ministries named above) used his might to get these foreign correspondents through the security cordon. In the end causing a huge embarrassment for the government. The attempt to subvert the I&B ministry's powers has been made to take over the accreditation process of foreign correspondents in the MEA hands. The attempt hasn't gone unnoticed and I&B Minister Ambika Soni, known for her temperamental nature, is expected to pay back in kind soon.
